The Villa of Dominik Skutezky with its garden is a unique family villa built in Bansk\u00e1 Bystrica at the request of the painter Dominik Skutezky, reflecting his artistic taste and admiration for Italian culture. It offers visitors a unique tour of the Permanent Exhibition of Dominik Skutezky<\/a>, commemorates the dramatic history of the Skutezky-Karva\u0161 family, and provides relaxation in the original urban garden park.<\/p>\n

The exhibition showcases the painter’s work, which was influenced by his long-term stay in Vienna and Venice. Skutezky’s art is characterized by his masterly command of old Italian painting and, in his later period, a specific interest in light inspired by the luminist (impressionist) painting of the late 19th century. The tour includes his well-known genre paintings with narrative scenes from famous Venetian temples and hidden corners, scenes of Bansk\u00e1 Bystrica urban life from the end of the Habsburg monarchy, refined portraits, and an exceptional series of coppersmiths documenting traditional work in local copper mills. The exhibition is extended by a virtual presentation mapping the fate of the artist and his family.<\/p>\n

The genius loci of the family villa was deeply marked by the tragic events of the Second World War, when the Skutezky-Karva\u0161 family faced persecution due to their Jewish origin (project<\/a> The Holocaust and the Fates of D. Skutezky’s Children). At the same time, it recalls the place of an exciting childhood and youth of Peter Karva\u0161, a prominent Slovak writer and playwright, who captured his memories in the book In the Nest. Currently, besides showcasing the painter’s work, the villa provides a cultural hub for other types of artistic activities, such as long-running literary readings, summer film screenings, or other artistic performances, supporting and educational activities. Between 2008 and 2010, a dedicated space titled Room 19_21 was reserved within the villa exhibition to present the visual art of the youngest generation.<\/p>\n

The construction of the Neo-Renaissance style villa was carried out around 1896 by the builder and artist\u2019s friend Adolf Holesch. The original designs of the architectural and visual form of the building, as well as the sgraffito decoration on the fa\u00e7ade, which were likely created by Skutezky himself, have not been preserved. The same applies to the artist’s estate, which was scattered during the Second World War when the villa was temporarily occupied by the Gestapo. After various reconstructions and modifications of the building in the second half of the 20th century, the original appearance of the fa\u00e7ade was restored in 1994, when it was adapted for the establishment of the painter’s permanent exhibition. The garden, declared a part of the national cultural monument called the Villa with Surroundings in 2011, represents a unique area of an urban garden park and is the last town garden on Horn\u00e1 Street in the center of Bansk\u00e1 Bystrica and the wider region.<\/p>\n
