Výstava Ars et Amor, Labor et Gloria predstaví
verejnosti doteraz neznáme a menej prezentované diela významného maliara
Dominika Skuteckého (1849-1921). Umelec sa koncom 19. storočia, po
pôsobení prevažne vo Viedni a Benátkach usadil v Banskej Bystrici. Práve
v centre Banskej Bystrice, v autentickom prostredí umelcovej rodinnej
vily, sídli už od roku 1994 jediná stála expozícia Skuteckého malieb zriadená
Stredoslovenskou galériou. Zostavenie dočasnej výstavy v Bethlenovom dome
pri príležitosti 20. výročia otvorenia stálej expozície ponúka jedinečnú
prehliadku ďalších, takmer 60-tich diel maliara zapožičaných zo súkromných
zbierok, zbierok galérií a múzeí na Slovensku a v Čechách.
Skuteckého vizuálne výrečné obrazy Vás prevedú pestrým dobovým prostredím benátskych
zákutí, pripomenú noblesu monarchie, oživia jej významné osobnosti, či lokálnu
históriu medených hámrov. Tiež však cez maliarsky dokument poodhalia podobizne
a blízke vzťahy z umelcovho súkromia a prostredia jeho pôsobenia.
Rozšírená prezentácia
Skuteckého diela prispeje k bližšiemu poznaniu umelcovej tvorby
a temperamentu, jeho profilovaniu a maliarskemu vyhraneniu. Po
výtvarnej stránke sa Skuteckého tvorba vyvíjala v dobovom kontexte od
strnulej historickej maľby smerom k živšej žánrovej maľbe, ďalej postupovala k
civilnejšiemu realizmu a riešeniu svetelných zámerov/problémov
v progresívnom duchu luminizmu a impresionizmu.
Výstava predstaví a doplní prehliadku
umelcovej tvorby v odlišnom pohľade inštalácie ako stála expozícia, ktorá
uprednostňuje prezentáciu v tematických okruhoch. Zámerom je upriamiť pozornosť
na maliarsku problematiku, špecifiká tvorby a záujmy umelca, na ktoré
odkazujú 4 kľúčové heslá: NARRATIO / príbeh, CORPUS ET COMPOSITIO / figúra
a kompozícia, LUMEN / svetlo,
PERSONA / osobnosť, charakter. Prvá časť výstavy pod názvom NARRATIO
poukazuje na umelcov cit pre pútavú dejovosť a komunikatívnosť
zobrazovaných scén, ktorý rozvinul najmä v súlade s tvorbou módneho
benátskeho mestského žánru. Pokračuje kolekciou CORPUS ET COMPOSITIO, kde sú
prezentované dynamické figurálne kompozície, živé figúry a gestá potvrdzujú
pozorného figuralistu s dôslednou akademickou prípravou a zároveň
skúseného pozorovateľa človeka v jeho prirodzených prejavoch. Pre umenie
konca 19. storočia bola dôležitá otázka spracovania svetla a preto výstava
pokračuje sekciou pod názvom LUMEN – záujem o podoby a premenlivosť
svetla, jeho pôsobenie v obraze a maliarske účinky s hrou farby
a tvaru, ktorý viedol maliara
k vyhľadávaniu špecifických podnetov a námetov. Nachádzal ich nielen
v atmosférických momentoch. Najsústredenejšie rozvíjal svetelné efekty
otvoreného ohňa, ktoré mu zvlášť poskytovalo miestne prostredie temných
medených hámrov a kováčskych dielní. Poslednou sekciou je maliarova
portrétna tvorba, žáner, pre ktorý ho vyhľadávali rôzne osobnosti nielen
z prostredia Banskej Bystrice ale aj z iných centier Rakúsko-Uhorska.
Preto táto sekcia pod názvom PERSONA – predstavuje Skuteckého bohatú portrétnu
tvorbu. Umelec vynikal schopnosťou vystihnúť portrét v adekvátnom zámere
reprezentácie, alebo civilnosti, v úprimnosti výpovede charakteru, živosti
a prirodzenosti, v hĺbke a detaile zároveň.
Výstava je zároveň
doplnená o prezentácie približujúce odbornú činnosť galérie, súvisiacu so
stálou expozíciou maliara. Po prvýkrát budú uvedené aktuálne zreštaurované
diela umelca zo zbierky Stredoslovenskej galérie s podrobnou
dokumentáciou. V rámci výskumnej činnosti budú odhalené ďalšie súvislosti
identifikácie a interpretácie známeho obrazu Trh v Banskej Bystrici v komparácii s maliarskou
štúdiou k dielu. Z oblasti propagačnej činnosti v spolupráci
s Katedrou vizuálnej komunikácie Vysokej školy výtvarného umenia budú odprezentované dizajnérsko-grafické
návrhy novej vizuálnej identity pre Stálu expozíciu Dominika Skuteckého.
Ars et Amor, Labor et Gloria
The exhibition Ars et Amor, Labor et Gloria presents to the public previously unknown and lesser-known works of the important painter Dominik Skutezky (also Skutecký, 1849-1921). The artist, after spending time in Vienna and Venice, settled in Banska Bystrica in the late 19th century. It is here in the center of Banská Bystrica, in the authentic environment of the artist’s family villa, that the only permanent exhibition of paintings by Skutezky has been held when it was established by the Central Slovak Gallery in 1994. The preparation of temporary exhibitions in the House of Bethlen to mark the 20th anniversary of the opening of the permanent exhibition offers a unique tour of almost 60 further works by the painter on loan from private collections and the collections of galleries and museums in Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Skutezky’s eloquent visual images take the viewer through various periods in the corners of Venice, remind us of the refinement of monarchy, and revive important personalities as well as the local history of the copper mills. As well as all this, through the document of his paintings we gain a greater insight into the artist’s personal life and the conditions in which he lived.
A broader presentation of Skutezky’s paintings contributes to a greater understanding of the artist’s work and his temperament, and the profile and focus of his painting. In terms of its artistic side, his work evolved from the contemporary context of stiff historical paintings towards a livelier genre painting, and further advanced to a civilised realism and the work on problems regarding light in the progressive spirit of luminism and impressionism.
The exhibition will present and give a tour of the artist’s work which provides a different view from that seen at the permanent exhibition, where the presentation of subject areas is employed. Here, the intention is to draw attention to particular artistic problems, particular works and the interests of the artist within the following four key terms: NARRATIO / story, CORPUS ET COMPOSITIO / figure and composition, LUMENS / light, PERSON / personality, character.
The first part of the exhibition entitled NARRATIO highlights the artist’s eye for an engaging sphere of action and communicative scenes that developed in accordance with the then fashionable Venetian urban genre. Next in the collection is the section CORPUS ET COMPOSITIO, in which are presented dynamic figure compositions. Live figures and figural gestures demonstrate careful viewing combined with academic training as well as demonstrating that the artist is an experienced observer of people and their natural expression. For art in late 19th century, light was an important issue and therefore exhibition continues with the section entitled LUMEN – interested in the forms and variability of light, Skutezky’s work in painting and painting effects deal with the play of color and shape, which led the painter to search for specific suggestions and ideas. They are found not only in atmospheric moments. The most intensely developed lighting effects depict open fire in the local environment of dark copper mills and forges. The last section is the painter’s portraits, a genre for which he sought different personalities not only from the environs of Banská Bystrica but also from other centers of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Therefore, this section is called PERSONA and it presents Skutezky’s rich portrait work. The artist excels in his ability to capture in portrait-form, a representation of intention, or civility, the sincere consideration of character, vibrancy and humanity, in both depth and detail.
The exhibition is also accompanied by a presentation of the professional activities of linked galleries, associated with The Permanent Exhibition of Dominik Skutecký. For the first time the recently restored the works of artists from the collection of the Central Slovak Gallery are presented with detailed documentation. As part of the research activities presented at the show, further work on the identification and interpretation of the famous painting The Market in Banská Bystrica in comparison with the painter’s studio work is revealed. In the field of promotional activities there are presentations on graphic designs relating to a new visual identity developed for The Permanent Exhibition of Dominik Skutecký carried out in collaboration with the Department of Visual Communication at the Academy of Fine Arts.
