Cosmic Landscape is an exhibition by artists Dušan Slivka and Juraj Gábor, which will create a platform for several months in the SSG Praetorium building to explore the phenomenon that surrounds us every day and which we call landscape.
Dušan Slivka entered the art scene in the 1970s. Through a cycle of minimalist photographs, he rejected the romanticized understanding of landscape and enriched the landscape tradition with a universal image offering a universal experience, free from ties to topos or national myth. He thus created an ideal type of landscape from a phenomenological perspective, a space for our reflection on the elements, structures, and meanings that build our relationship with the world we inhabit.
What we find in Slivka’s carefully composed two dimensional world, Juraj Gábor creates in the real world. He is primarily known for his large scale, site specific installations with precisely executed architecture, through which he prompts the viewer to think about space, view, and image, regularly taking place within a landscape or with an awareness of it. In doing so, Gábor does not only refine the object itself structurally, aesthetically, and philosophically, but also its existence and context within the wider surroundings.
Despite being an intergenerational exhibition from today’s perspective, it is essentially an exhibition of forty year olds. Dušan Slivka (1944) created his cycle when he was forty, Juraj Gábor (1985) is currently forty years old, and so is the curator. The human experience is largely universal, and certain questions simply remain. The horizon is not a line in space, but the limit of our current vision. The Cosmic Landscape exhibition aims to look beyond this boundary.
